Loving Father and Grandfather
LOWELL Serafim A. Silva, 78, of Lowell, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday, October 18, 2012, at Radius Northwood Health Care Center after a long illness. He was the widower of the late Maria L. (Silva) Silva.
A son of the late Joao and the late Virginia (Silva) Sousa, he was born August 22, 1934, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal where he was educated. He served in the Portuguese Army before becoming a tobacco distributor in Graciosa where he was a proprieter of his own convenience store. He moved to the United States in 1967 with his family, settling in Lowell on Back Central Street and North Street, later moving to Pawtucketville.
Mr. Silva worked in the Lowell Mills for Southwell Combing and later he became the proprietor of Caron's Package Store in Lawrence until his retirement.
Serafim loved to care for his grandchildren when they were young. A lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Society as well as the Portuguese American Center, the Portuguese American Civic League, and the Portuguese Senior Citizens, his most cherished times were spent in the company of his many friends at the 'Blues Club' playing cards and playing dominoes.
He is survived by his son, Manuel Silva of Lowell; his grand daughter, Jacqueline Silva of Lowell; his grandson, Eric Silva of Lowell; his sister, Maria Espinola of Toronto, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also a brother of the late Manuel, the late Antonio, the late Marcelino, and the late Gerberto.
