Loving Husband, Father, Father in Law, Doting Grandfather
NORTH BILLERICA Norberto Bettencourt Santos, 74, of North Billerica, died Friday, August 9, 2013, at Lowell General Hospital-Saints Campus after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria V. (DaSilva) Santos, with whom he celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary of Fifty Years, this past January 19.
Born October 15, 1938, in Graciosa, Portugal, he was a son of the late Armandino and the late Luisa (Augusta) Santos, and was educated in that area, serving with the Portuguese Military. He came from Graciosa in 1968 with his family, settling in the Back Central Street Neighborhood, residing on Swift Street from 1972 until 1989 when he moved to Billerica.
Mr. Santos was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, and a member of the Holy Ghost and Trindade. He was a former member of the Portuguese American Center, the ‘Blues Club’.
Norberto enjoyed gardening, especially tending to his grapevines and made his own wine. He was well known throughout the community for his garden on Swift Street which he meticulously maintained over the years. He also enjoyed watching soccer from Portugal on television. He especially enjoyed watching his baby girls, his granddaughters, grow up.
For over thirty years, he worked as a machine operator for Bradford Industries in Lowell.
In addition to his wife, Maria, he is survived by his daughter, Maria Helena DaSilva and her husband, Kenneth, of North Billerica; his granddaughters, Rebecca J. DaSilva and Bethany J. DaSilva, both of North Billerica; his brother, Armandino B. Santos and his wife, Maria DeJesus, of Cambridge, Ontario; his sisters in law, Maria Eugenia Mendonca and her husband, Hildalberto, of Tewksbury, and Flavia DaLuz Silva of Salvador, Brazil; his Godparents, Manuel Espinola and his wife, Almerinda, of Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Portugal; many cousins throughout Massachusetts, Canada, and Portugal, especially his cousin, Fatima Medeiros of Lowell; his niece and God daughter, Gloria Melo and her husband, Victor, of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada as well as his nieces, Alice Realejo and her husband, Donny, and their three children, Kevin, Katrina and Kyle all of Tewksbury, Denia Mendonca and her fiance, Tom Cole, and their children, Nathan and Jenna Cole of Tewksbury and Lili Mendonca and Jim Cooper and their children, Serena Jalbert and Ariel Cooper, of Nashua, NH.
He was the brother in law of the late Manuel Medina of Salvador, Brazil, and was also predeceased by many cousins and other extended family members.
