Mark S. Umphrey P.E.

LOWELL Mark S. Umphrey, P.E., 51, of Lowell, died unexpectedly, Monday, Sept. 28, in Lowell. He was the beloved husband of Denise (Krysiak) Umphrey with whom he celebrated their Twenty Eighth Wedding Anniversary this past year.

Born May 27, 1958, in Worcester, he was a son of Glen B. and Jane R. (Shenkowski) Umphrey of Worcester, MA, and was raised and educated in that area, graduating from Burncoat High School. He attended the University of Lowell, receiving a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Recently he, along his wife, went on to attain a Master’s Degree in Community Social Psychology, also from UMass Lowell.

After graduating with his B.S.M.E. in 1981 from UMass Lowell, he worked as an engineer in training in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning field at Thermo Engineering, Inc., which his father co-founded in 1962. He later went on to become a Professional Engineer and president and owner of that company. In 1993, he and his wife established a second company, Umphrey Engineering, L.L.C., in Lowell, which specialized in engineering, consulting, and contracting for clean rooms for the medical and research fields.

He made his home in the Belvedere Section of Lowell and was a communicant of Holy Trinity Polish Church. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He was a former Board Member of the Greater Lowell Rape Crisis Center. He was a strong supporter of many community and local non-profit organizations.

He enjoyed most of all spending time with his family. In his spare time he enjoyed boating on Lake Winnipesaukee with family and friends. He loved traveling, meeting new people, and experiencing different cultures, food, and music. He was fortunate enough to have travelled to Italy, Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Vienna, Budapest, England, Canada, and many islands throughout the Caribbean. Most recently he and his wife took a cruise to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Aruba. He was a fan of Formula One Racing and enjoyed attending operas and plays. He was a great admirer of the blues and classic rock music. He thoroughly enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, gardening at home, and playing golf, where he was a former member of the Ridgewood Country Club in Moultonborough, NH. He was also an avid Lowell Golden Gloves fan and season ticket holder for over twenty years.

Mark was most proud of the accomplishments of his children, both of whom were graduates of The College of The Holy Cross in Worcester. Currently, his son, Mark, is a third year Medical Student at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and his daughter, Elizabeth, is a first year graduate student at Boston University School of Public Health.

In addition to his wife, Denise, his son, Mark, his daughter, Elizabeth, and his parents, Glen and Jane, he is survived by a brother, James G. Umphrey and his wife, Maureen, of Northboro; his sisters, Kim M. Eckerman of Wyoming, and Joy Borrello and her husband, Philip, of Tyngsboro; his mother in law, Alice M. Krysiak of Moultonborough, NH; brothers and sisters in law, Dennis Krysiak and his wife, Sharon, of Tyngsboro, Dianna Xifaras and her husband, George, of Nashua, NH, Debra Krysiak of Moultonborough, NH, Donna Spano and her husband, Paul, of Lowell, Darlene Loosigian of Westford; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
