LOWELL Maria de Lourdes (Barcelos) Silva, 87, of Lowell, died Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at her home after a brief illness with her family by her side. Since their marriage in Terceira seventy years ago, she was the devoted wife of Cipriano C. Silva.
A daughter of the late Francisco and the late Virginia (Santos) Barcelos, she was born May 2, 1925, in Terceira, Azores, Portugal and raised and educated in that area. In 1966, she came to the United States with her family, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood.
A communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, she worked for many years as a seamstress at Hathaway Shirts and later for Highland Towel. She loved to take care of children, and retired to take care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved knitting and crocheting.
In addition to her husband, Cipriano, she is survived by her children, Manuel C. Cunha and his wife, Maria, of Terceira, Azores, Jose B. Silva and his wife, Ermelinda, of Lowell, Maria L. Gomes and her husband, Antonio, of Lowell, and Mary ‘Vicky’ Silveira and her husband, Manny, of Lowell; eleven grandchildren, Cindy Borges, Paulo Silva, Kimberly Sousa, Danny Silva and Jessica Silva, Lisa Gomes, Fatima Montanez and Olivia Gomes, and Erika Silveira, Melissa Silveira-Pais and Paul Silveira; eleven great grandchildren, Beatriz, Clara, Destiny, Sereia, Anthony, Timothy, Trinity, Devannia, Roman, Gabriela and Damion; three sisters, Virginia Angelo of Terceira, Livramento Vieira of Terceira and Palmira Sousa of Terceira; and many nieces and nephews including Francisco "Chico" Sousa of Lowell, and her Godchild, Jose Angelo of Rhode Island.
She was also a sister of the late Maria Virginia Vieira, the late Francisco Santos, the late Manuel Barcelos, the late Carlos Santos, the late Isequel Barcelos and the late Jose Santos.
