Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother
LOWELL Maria Fatima (Pontes) Mendonca, 76, of Lowell, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at her home after a long illness with her family by her side. She was the widow of the late Manuel C. Mendonca.
Born October 25, 1934, in Terceira, Azores, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Jose and the late Angelina Pontes. She came to the United States in January of 1968, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood.
For many years, she made her home in Chelmsford before residing again in Lowell, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. She enjoyed tending to her flower garden and knitting and crocheting. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and especially with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Mendonca worked as a circuit board technician for Wang Laboratories for over twelve years, and then worked as an assembler with Cambridge Tool and Dye in Billerica for three years before her retirement.
She is survived by her sons, Raul A. Mendonca and his wife, Maria, of Lowell, and John M. Mendonca of Lowell; five grandchildren, Roy Mendonca, Angela Mendonca, Benjamin Mendonca, Keiana Mendonca, and Shawn Mendonca; a great granddaughter, Malina Mendonca; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many members of The Mendonca Family.
She was also a sister of the late Jose Pontes and the late Eduardo Pontes.
