Maria Luiza Pia Bettencourt
LOWELL Maria Luiza Pia Bettencourt, 89, of Lowell, died unexpectedly Friday, December 18, 2009, at Saints Medical Center, after a brief illness. She was the widower of the late Humberto Correia who passed away in November of 2001.
Born July 10, 1920, in Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Joao and the late Conceicao Bettencourt, and was raised in that area, moving to the United States in 1981.
She settled in Lowell, making her home in the Back Central Street area of the City, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. Spending time with and caring for her grandchildren and her great grandchildren was her joy in life. She also enjoyed cooking "the family meals".
Maria was the mother of the late Humberto M. Correia, former long time President of the Portuguese American Center, and is survived by his widow, Maria J. Correia of Lowell; her granddaughter, Marylene V. Ruiz of Nashua, NH; her grandson, Michael V. Correia of Pepperell; her great granddaughters, Nysia C. Ruiz of Nashua, NH, and Natalia E. Correia of Pepperell; her sister, Carlota Bettencourt of Graciosa, Azores; and many nieces and nephews throughout the United States and The Azores, including Natal DaSilva of Peabody and Maria Fatima Espinola of Dracut.
