Maria Lourdes ‘Lola’ Silva
LOWELL Maria L. ‘Lola’ (Silva) Silva, 87, of Lowell, passed away peacefully, Monday, December 26, 2016, at Northwood Rehabilitation Center with her daughter at her side. She was the beloved wife of Juvenal C. Silva, with whom she had celebrated many glorious years of marriage.
A daughter of the late Manuel and the late Isabel Silva, she was born March 20, 1929, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, and grew up and was educated in that area. In 1966, she came to the United States with her family, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood.
A longtime communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, she was also a lifetime member of the Holy Ghost Society. Time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, is what brought her the most happiness. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting, and her handy work could be seen throughout her home and in the homes of her family and friends. In addition, she enjoyed playing cards, especially Sueca. She had worked at Nathan Soloman for many years as a stitcher before her retirement.
In addition to her loving husband, Juvenal, she is survived by her daughter, Maria "Beatriz" Tavares of Lowell; her grandchildren, Gina DeMelo and her husband, Vasco, of Methuen, Tina Cunha and her husband, Jerry, of Dracut, and Anita Tavares and Sidonio Iria of Lowell; her great grandchildren, Claudia DeMelo, Leah DeMelo, Kendra DeMelo, Vania DeMelo, and Sebastian Cunha; her brother, Manuel C. Silva of Lowell; her step sister, Lindoura Freitas of Lowell; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Jose Silva and her sister in law, Georgina Silva.
The family would like to thank the staff at Northwood Rehabilitation Center for the kind and compassionate care bestowed upon Maria during her stay at the nursing home.
