Maria Pimentel Castelo

"Beloved Mother and Grandmother"

LOWELL Maria Pimentel (Mendonca) Castelo, 84, of Lowell, died Monday, July 12, 2010, at Fairhaven Nursing Home. She was the widow of the late Luis G. Castelo.

A daughter of the late Alfredo and the late Ana (Pimentel) Mendonca, she was born September 20, 1925, in Lajes, Flores, Azores, Portugal. In 1971, she came to the United States with her family, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Street Neighborhood, where she continued to reside for many years. Maria was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, and a member of the Holy Ghost Society in Stoughton. She cherished time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. Her hobbies included knitting and crocheting.

She worked for many years with Carol Shoe and Paris Shoe until her retirement.

She is survived by her children, Teresa Torres and her husband, Delfino, of Pelham, NH, Maria Raposo and her husband, Luis, of Lowell, Leontina M. Castelo of Lowell, Antonio Luis Castelo and Filomena Rocha of Blainville, Quebec, Canada, and Jose Castelo and his wife, Patricia, of Lowell;
her eight grandchildren, Veronica Castelo-Rowlett and her husband, Shawn, both currently serving with the United States Air Force stationed in Idaho, Richard and Mathew Castelo of Canada, Jesse Castelo, Michelle Raposo, Sara Conde and Steven Torres and his fiance, Erica Khadije, all of Lowell and Brooke Torres of Pelham, NH; her brother, Francisco Mendonca of Flores, Azores, Portugal; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, throughout the United States, Canada and Portugal.

She was also the mother of the late Antonio Luis Castelo, and sister of the late Jose Mendonca, the late Alfredo Mendonca, the late Ana Melo and the late Cecilia Soares.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HER CALLING HOURS 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON WEDNESDAY. ON THURSDAY, HER FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816.
