Manuel Gregorio Veiga
LOWELL Manuel Gregorio Veiga, 65, of Lowell, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital after a long illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria Antonina (Lima) Veiga, with whom he would have celebrated their Twenty Seventh Wedding Anniversary this year.

A son of the late Serafim E. Veiga and the late Maria (Cunha) Veiga, he was also raised by the late Alexandrina Veiga. He was born March 17, 1949, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, and was raised and educated in that area. He served with the Portuguese Military before coming to the United States in July 1971. He settled in Peabody before making his home in Lowell.

A communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, he was also a member of the Portuguese American Club, the ‘Blues Club’, the Portuguese American Civic League, the ‘Reds’ Club and the Holy Ghost Society. When he wasn’t enjoying time spent with family, he enjoyed playing cards and especially enjoyed gardening and tending to his grapes.

Mr. Veiga worked as a machine operator in plastics manufacturing in Wakefield for many years prior to his illness.

In addition to his wife, Maria, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth L. Mendonca and her husband, Steve, of Lowell, Kevin G. Veiga of Lowell, and Emily M. Veiga of Lowell; his sisters, Maria Amelia Santos and her husband, Gabriel, of Tewksbury, and Maria Salvona and her husband, Paul, of Peabody; his brother, Manuel Heliodor and his wife, Elisa, of Wakefield; his nieces and nephews, Danny Santos and his wife, Melissa, Jason Santos and Mary Anne Hurhula, and Alisha Veiga; his grand nieces and grand nephew, Sophia, Avery and Jacob Santos; his aunts and uncles, including Belmira Bettencourt, Antonino S. Cunha, Domingos S. Cunha all of Graciosa, as well as many cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his late uncle and aunt Jose Espinola Cunha and Dionisia Picanso.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON FRIDAY, APRIL 25. ON SATURDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST., LOWELL, AT 10 A.M.. BURIAL IN ST. MARY CEMETERY
