Manuel A. da Silva
LOWELL Manuel A. da Silva, 87, of Lowell, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Palm Center after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Maria A. (Cunha) da Silva whom he married in Faial, Azores, Portugal in 1953.
Born February 16, 1927, in Pico, Azores, Portugal, he was a son of the late Maria Emilia Silveira. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the Portuguese Military and was stationed in Mozambique. After his Honorable Discharge, he made his home in Mozambique for over twenty five years, where he raised his family. In 1971, he moved to the United States with his family, settling in Lowell, where he made his home until his death.
Manuel was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church where he was an active member of the Church community for many years. In addition to spending time with his family, his absolute favorite pasttime was fishing.
While living in Mozambique, he worked as a Police Officer and later worked as a crane operator in construction. In Lowell, he worked as a technician for Wang Laboratories for many years before his retirement.
Besides his wife, Maria, he is survived by his children, Maria Silva of Lowell and Rui Silva and his wife, Billie, of Fort Myers, FL; his two grandchildren, Marco Rocha of Palm Desert, CA, and Ryan Silva of Fort Myers, FL; his sisters, Teresa Pavao and Rosa bothe of Toronto, Canada; his close friend who was like a brother, Henrique Sousa of Pelham, NH; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the grandfather of the late Paulo Rocha who passed away in 2003.
