Joseph M. Ryan
LOWELL Joseph M. Ryan, 82, a lifelong Lowell resident, died after a brief illness Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Fairhaven Nursing Home.
Born September 7, 1926, in Lowell, he was a son of the late Joseph and the late Sarah (Fagan) Ryan. He grew up in the lower Highlands, and was educated in the Lowell schools, graduating from Lowell High School, Class of 1942. He was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
After his honorable discharge, he returned to Lowell, residing on Kimball Avenue, before making his home on Harland Avenue, and was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was employed as a Linotype Operator for Courier Citizen before he was drafted into the Army, and returned to his position, retiring after thirty nine years of service. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and golfing, and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Golf Club. He also would spend his spare time skating at the Janas Rink, and also enjoyed Rockingham Park Race Track. Joe could also be found taking long walks all over the City.
He is survived by a sister Mary Dougherty of Dracut: a brother James P. Ryan and his wife, Eleanor, of Lowell; a sister in law, Angela Ryan of Chelmsford; a niece and eleven nephews.
He was the brother of the late Margaret Ryan, the late Robert Ryan, the late Bernard Ryan, and the late Claire Egan.
