José S. Lobão
LOWELL José S. Lobão, 88, of Lowell, passed away after a brief illness, Monday, January 30, 2017, at his residence with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband of Maria Lourdes (Mendonca) Lobão, with whom he celebrated Sixty Two years of Marriage last October, 30.
A son of the late Antonio C. Lobão and the late Laurentina (Silva) Lobão, he was born July 4, 1928, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal. He was raised and educated in Graciosa where he made his home for twenty seven years, before moving to Terceira where he resided for twelve years. He then moved to Johannesburg, South Africa for four years before moving to the United States in November of 1969. He settled in Lowell and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.
Jose worked as an assembler for Batesville Casket Company in Nashua, New Hampshire for twenty five years before his retirement. He was a very active member of the Holy Ghost Society, and loved the feasts, and dinner dances. He was also a member of the Portuguese American Civic League, the 'Reds Club.
Time spent with his wife, children, and grand children were his favorite past time, he loved being part of his grandchildren's life and helping to raise them. In addition, he enjoyed fishing, and gardening, he took great pride taking care of his vegetable garden, his grass and especially his grapes, and also he enjoyed playing the guitar, and cards.
In addition to his loving wife, Maria, he is survived by his son, José Manuel Lobão and his wife, Maria Nazaré, of Lowell; his grandsons, Sean, Jason, Philip, Nathan, and Kyle Lobão, all of Lowell; his great grand daughters, Abrianna and Giavana; his only surviving sister, Zulmira Silva, of Graciosa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Maria Silva, Deolinda Veiga, Manuel, Eugenio, and Guillermo Lobão, and the longtime close friend of the late Jose Batista Rego, who became friends while both living in South Africa, a friendship continued for the rest of their lives.
