Jose F. ‘Malinha’ Furtado

LOWELL       Jose F. ‘Malinha’ Furtado, 78, of Lowell, died unexpectedly, Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Lowell General Hospital.   He was the husband of Evangelina (Gomes) Furtado.

      A son of the late Francisco and the late Emilia (Coelho) Furtado, he was born May 19, 1930, in Terceira, Azores, where he grew up and was educated.  As an adult, he served with the Portuguese Army, as well as worked as a truck driver and barber before coming to the United States in 1973, settling in Lowell.

     He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed spending time with his family and could be found in his spare time tending to his grapes and gardening.  He worked for General Electric as a welder for eighteen years prior to his retirement and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.

      In addition to his wife of Fifty Two years, Evangelina, he is survived by two sons, Frank Furtado and his wife, Lisha, of Pelham, NH, and Joe Furtado and his girlfriend, Kim, of Lowell; six grandchildren, Frank Furtado and his wife, Erin, of Pelham, NH, Tony Furtado and his wife, Brenda, of Pelham, NH, Steven Furtado, Samantha Furtado, and Andy Furtado all of Derry, NH, and Amanda Furtado of Lowell; four great grandchildren, Dahlia Furtado, Antonio Furtado, Bella Furtado, and Lilliana Furtado all of Pelham, NH; his brothers and sisters, Conceicao Nougira and Emelia Silva both of Terciera, Azores, and Antonio Furtado and his wife, Maria, of Canada; and many nieces and nephews.

     He was also the father of the late Joseph Furtado who passed away at a young age in 1957.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 2 UNTIL 6 P.M. ON SUNDAY.  

ON MONDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 8 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. 

HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH AT 9 A.M.. 

BURIAL IN LOWELL CEMETERY.
