Jose E. ‘Joe’ Sousa
LOWELL Jose E. ‘Joe’ Sousa, 60, of Lowell, died Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at Lowell General Hospital after a three year battle with Cirrhosis. He was the husband of Martha (Laurencio) Sousa.
Born November 6, 1950, in Flores, Azores, he was a son of Hilda (Costa) Sousa of Canada, and the late Ernesto Sousa. At a young age, he moved to Sao Miguel, where he grew up and was educated. There, he worked as a mason and was a member of the Portuguese Military, serving in active service in Guinea.
In 1975, he came to the United States with his wife, settling in Lowell. He worked for Carroll Shoe, Joan Fabrics, and Prince Macaroni.
An avid fisherman, he enjoyed attending the Portuguese Feasts at the Holy Ghost, and many in the community will remember his great sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, Martha, he is survived by three sons, Jose L. Sousa and his wife, Amelia, of Lowell, Paul Sousa and his wife, Amber, of Tulsa, OK, and Peter Sousa of Lowell; a grand daughter, Stella Sousa of Tulsa, OK; two sisters, Maria Soares and her husband, Joao, of Toronto, Canada, and Adelaide Laurencio and her husband, Manuel, of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews.
