Jose Albino Pombeiro
"Beloved Husband and Father"
LOWELL Jose A. Pombeiro, 70, of Lowell, died after a lengthy illness, Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehabilitation Hospital in Salem, MA, with his beloved wife, Maria by his side. They celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary this past July.
A son of the late Jose Raposo Pombeiro and the late Maria Valentina (Garcia) Pombeiro, he was born November 25, 1939, in Faial, Azores, Portugal, was educated in Faial and Pico. While in Portugal, he served as a Morse Code operator in the Portuguese Army. He came to the United States in July of 1965, settling in Lowell.
He resided in the Belvidere Section of the City, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church and a member of the Portuguese American Club and the Holy Ghost Society. For over twenty years, he was heavily involved with the Cursillo Movement, having served as Secretary. He also worked as Sexton at St. Anthony's Church for many years.
Joe was a handyman, and worked out of his home workshop, on projects for himself and others, and always had his toolbox with him to offer his assistance, if needed. He spent many years volunteering throughout the area, and with his wife, Maria, volunteered for over fifteen years at MCI Shirley working with the prisoners. With Maria, he helped to organize and participated in several Cursillo Retreats.
Mr. Pombeiro worked as a maintenance mechanic for BASF for more than twenty years before his retirement.
In addition to his wife, Maria, he is survived by his daughters, Elsa M. Pombeiro and her husband, Richard LaFond, of Bedford, NH, and Carmen A. Pombeiro and her husband, John Wallace, of Lowell; his mother-in-law, Maria A. Rosa of Lowell; his sister-in-law, Maria Fatima Mendonca and her husband, Joseph, of Lowell; his brothers-in-law, Jerry E. Rosa and his wife, Maxine, of West Palm Beach, FL, and Antonio M. Rosa of Lowell; several cousins including Miguel Pombeiro and his wife, Natividade, of Nashua, NH, and many nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the U.S., Canada and Portugal.
YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 4 UNTIL 8 P.M. ON FRIDAY. ON SATURDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 10 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH 243 CENTRAL STREET LOWELL, AT 11 A.M.. BURIAL IN ST. PATRICK CEMETERY.
