Joao Verissimo
LOWELL Joao Verissimo, of Lowell, died Monday, March 22, 2010, at Fairhaven Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the widower of the late Zulmira (Silva) Verissimo who died in 1990.
Born June 24, 1922, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was educated in that area and worked there until 1968, when he moved his family to the United States to make a better future for them. He settled in Lowell, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.
Joao was a member of the Portuguese American Center on Charles Street, and also tended bar there for twenty two years. He was also a member of the Portuguese American Civic League on Central Street as well as a member of the Holy Ghost Society. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Sueca in which he attained the title of "Campeao de Sueca" while in Portugal. He also enjoyed day trips with the Senior Center.
When he first settled in the United States, he worked for United Heel until he began tending bar for the Club.
He is survived by four children, Maria J. Correia of Lowell, Maria M. Verissimo of Lowell, Diana S. (Verissimo) Pacheco and her husband, Pedro, of Lowell, and Armandino Verissimo of Lowell; seven grandchildren, Marylene Ruiz and Michael Correia both of Nashua, NH, Linda (Verissimo) Bolduc and her husband, Jason, of Dracut, and Danny Verissimo, Nathan Verissimo, Maeleigh Pacheco, and Ayla Pacheco all of Lowell, two great grandchildren, Nysia Ruiz and Natalia Correia both of Nashua, NH; a brother, Daniel Verissimo and his wife, Francelina, of Auburn, CA; two sisters, Mariana Candido and her husband, Manuel, of Peabody, and Margarida Leite of Graciosa; one God daughter, Manuela Cunha of Dracut and many nieces and nephews in the United States and Portugal.
He was also the widow of the late Armandina Cunha who passed away in 1946, father of the late Joao Manuel Verissimo, and father in law of the late Humberto M. Correia.
