Beloved Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather
LOWELL Joao Bettencourt, 88, of Lowell, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved wife of Antonieta Gil (Ramos) Bettencourt with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past November 24.
He was born on August 24, 1926 in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal a son of the late Jose and the late Luisa (Bettencourt) DaSilva. Joao grew up in Graciosa, where he attended the local schools. While in Portugal, he worked as painter and a fisherman before moving to the United States in December of 1966, settling in Lowell.
Joao resided in Lowell and was a communicant of St. Anthony Parish. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing soccer and raising rabbits. He was employed for United Heel, Commadore Foods, and Bradford Industries throughout his lifetime.
In addition to his beloved wife, Antonieta, he is survived by his seven children, Maria Bettencourt and her husband, Serafim of Chelmsford, Denia Cunha and her husband, Manuel of Lowell, Valdemar Bettencourt and his wife, Xiaopei Wang of Nashua, George Bettencourt and his wife, Kathy of Lowell, Aginaldo Bettencourt and his wife, Elizabeth of Lowell, Neogenio Bettencourt of Lowell, and Teresa Bettencourt of Mississippi; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Teresa Silva of Lowell; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family members.
Joao was also the brother of the late Frank Bettencourt and Cecilia Perreira.
