Jesuvina M. Sousa
LOWELL Jesuvina M. (Horta) Sousa, 87, of Lowell, died Thursday, July 29, 2010, peacefully at her home with her family by her side, after a long illness. She was the widow of the late Americo Souza who died December 31, 2009.
A daughter of the late Jose Horta and the late Joaquina (Lourenco) Horta, she was born May 24, 1923, in Sao Gregorio, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal and raised in that area. She worked in the fields and was a housekeeper to help support her family.
She married Americo in Portugal, and in 1961 came to the United States with her daughters to join her husband who had come to Lowell a year earlier. She worked in a few of the area stitching factories and also worked for Sweetheart Plastics for many years before her retirement in 1986.
Jesuvina enjoyed crocheting, knitting, telling stories, and talking with her friends and family. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish as well as the Holy Rosary Sodality and the Portuguese American Center.
She is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth Tavares and Deonilde "Donna" Silva both of Lowell; her two granddaughters, Lisa Silva-Gallant of Lowell and Lizette Frobese of Nashua; her four great grandchildren, Krystle Silva, Melissa Wilbur, Devon Gallant, and Aden Frobese; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also the sister of the late Jose Lourenco, the late Anunciacão Corado, the late Armando Horta, and the late Joaquin L. Horta.
