Jeronimo Araujo Lopes

LOWELL Jeronimo Araujo Lopes, 89, of Lowell, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Colonial Heights Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the widower of the late Maria Borges (Avila) Lopes who passed away in 2012.

A son of the late Francisco Araujo Lopes and the late Hortence da (Conceicao) Maia Mourao, he was born April 25, 1926, in Angra do Heroismo, Terceira, Azores. He was raised and educated in Portugal and served thirty six years with the Portuguese Air Force.

In 1980, he moved with his family to the United States, settling in Lowell. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Parish, as well as the local Portuguese Cultural and Social institutions. In the mid 1980’s, he became a United States Citizen.

Mr. Lopes loved to read and write, and in 2002, with the help of family and friends, he wrote and self-published in Portuguese “Holy Ghost, Each Step of the Way”. He was an avid traveler with his wife of sixty years, his hobbies included watching TV, among many others, but most especially, spending time with family and friends. He worked at Tau-Tron in Westford as a mechanical technician prior to his retirement.

He is survived by his son, Francisco "Frank" Jose de Avila Araujo Lopes and his wife, Dolores (Santos) Lopes of Lowell; his grandchildren, Vanessa Luisa, Matthew Paul and Christopher Ryan Lopes; and his great grandson, Austin Michael Lopes. One of eighteen children, he is survived by Nadil Manuel Maia Araujo of Lisbon, Portugal, Maria de Assis Araujo Calçada of Lisbon, Portugal, and Rosa de Jesus Araujo Gonçalves of Terceira, Azores; and many nieces and nephews.

Brother of the late Jorge Maia Araujo, Fernanda Maia Mourão Sousa, and Carlos Maia Mourão Araujo Lopes.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 8 UNTIL 10 A.M. ON THURSDAY MORNING, JUNE 4, AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST., LOWELL, AT 11 A.M.. BURIAL IN ST. MARY CEMETERY.
