Hilda S. Mendes

DRACUT Hilda (Sequeira) Mendes, 92, of Dracut, passed away at Northwood Nursing Home surrounded by her family after a brief illness on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. She was the widow of the late Manuel Mendes who died in 1998.

Born April 7, 1920, in Lowell, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and the late Maria Jose (De Ponte) Sequeira. She moved to Madeira, Portugal at the age of two with her parents, where she was educated and resided until February of 1946. She returned to the United States, settling first in Lowell, then relocating to Dracut where she made her home until her death.

She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, and was a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality. She worked in area mills, and as a trimmer for several Dress Shops. Hilda loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and also enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, gardening, as well as traveling to Mohegan Sun with her family.

She is survived by her children, Maria G. Barbosa and her husband, John, of Dracut, Manuel A. Mendes and his wife, Judith (Foley), of Tyngsboro, Antonio C. Mendes and his wife, Lorraine (Hingston), of Hudson, NH, Adeline T. Mendes of Dracut, and Delores J. Millard of Lowell; her ten grandchildren Paul Barbosa,Christine O’Donnell, Antonio Mendes, Edward Mendes, David Mendes, Dawn Wilder, Daniel Mendes, Elaina Millard, Rob Millard-Mendez, and Marissa Millard; her ten great grandchildren, Aaron Barbosa, Adam Barbosa, TJ Mendes, Orion O’Donnell, Lilly Mendes, Olivia O’Donnell, Luke Mendes, Joshua Mendes, Aidan Wilder, and Ben Mendes; her sisters, Maria Jose DeSousa and her husband, Manuel, of Madeira and Aldora Dos Santos of Venezuela; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was also a sister of the late Anibal Sequeira, Manuel Sequeira, and Abel Sequeira.
Hilda’s family would like to thank the caring, devoted staff of Northwood Nursing Home and New England Hospice for the loving attention she received.
