Hermenegildo ‘Herman’ Silva
LOWELL Hermenegildo ‘Herman’ Silva, 68, of Lowell, died Thursday, December 18, 2008, after a battle with cancer, peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was the husband of Teresina (Bettencourt) Silva, with whom he celebrated their Forty Third Wedding Anniversary this past May.
A son of the late Eduardo L Dasilva and the late Luiza (Melo) (DaSilva) Andrade, he was born August 16, 1940, in Salvador, Bahia, Brasil, and moved to Graciosa, Açores in 1950 at the age of ten. He resided in the Açores until 1959, when he moved to the United States in 1959 with his family, settling in Lowell.
He made his home in the Back Central Street neighborhood, and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church where he was a member of the Choir. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society, the Portuguese American Center, the Portuguese Senior Center, and the Trindade Society.
Mr. Silva worked as a Mechanic Assembler for Raytheon in Waltham, and Andover, retiring from Andover after a thirty eight year career.
Herman’s passion was playing music, dancing, traveling, spending time at the Beach, and spending time with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Teresina, he is survived by a daughter, Maria de Fatima Silva and her husband, Leo, of Hudson, NH; a son, Edward F. Silva of Lowell; two grand daughters, Nikita L. Silva of Hudson, NH and Toni Marie Bryan of Tyngsborough; a sister, Luzia DaSilva of Toronto, Canada; a sister in law, Maria de Fatima Bettencourt of Graciosa, Açores; nieces and nephews, Tony DaSilva and his wife, Diana, and Michael DaSilva all of Toronto, Canada, and Anita and Francisco Medeiros of Graciosa, Açores, Portugal; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, Godchildren, and friends throughout Brasil, the Acores, Canada, and the United States.
He was also the brother of the late Carmelita DaSilva, Stepson of the late Nuno Andrade, brother in law of the late Humbelo DaSilva, brother in law of the late Eduardo Medeiros, and son in law of the late Francisco and Anna Bettencourt.
