Haig S. Goodsoozian
World War II Army Veteran, D-Day Survivor
LOWELL Haig S. Goodsoozian, 91, of Lowell, passed away Friday, October 30, 2015, at Willow Manor after years of declining health. He was the beloved husband of Sue (Guregian) Goodsoozian, with whom he would have celebrated 69 years of marriage in just a few weeks.
A son of the late Sahag and the late Arshalous (Najarian) Goodsoozian, he was born April 20, 1924, in Lowell and was educated in the Lowell School System, graduating from Lowell High School.
Drafted for World War II, Haig was an Army sergeant attached to the Navy Construction Battalion called the Seabees. On D-Day he went to Omaha Beach on the Mark Hanna, transporting munitions, and witnessed the epic event first hand, both in seeing his fellow soldiers die in combat, as well as guarding German POW's.
After the War, he returned to Lowell, barbering in the six chair family barber shop, the Rialto Barber Shop on Central Street where he continued the family tradition until his retirement in 1990.
Haig grew up in the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church and remained active in the Parish through his lifetime. In the Parish, Haig has served on the Parish Council numerous times, and the Building Committee for the Church’s Chelmsford location. With his encouragement, his son, David, attended deacons classes and served at the altar for many years. Haig continued as an original member of the Parish's Gifts and Memorials Committee, and as he had for more than thirty years, would always be happy to talk with parishioners about a memorial gift to the Church.
In addition to spending time with family and friends, he also enjoyed gardening, and golfing.
Besides his beloved wife, Sue, he is survived by his son, David Goodsoozian of Lowell; his grand daughter, Anna Marie Goodsoozian of Ocean Side, California; his brother, Sam Goodsoozian and his wife, Gloria, of Fresno, California; and many nieces and nephews.
