Gerald R. Hamel
Lifelong Lowell Resident

LOWELL Gerald R. Hamel, 80, of Lowell, died peacefully Friday, November 23, 2012 at Willow Manor Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Angela M. (Driscoll) Hamel who passed away in 1976 after sixteen years of marriage.

Born August 11, 1932, in Lowell, he was a son of the late Roland H. Hamel, and the late Diana (Lavoie) Hamel, attended the local schools including Keith Academy before moving onto Lowell Technological Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Mr. Hamel served his country for two years with the United States Army Medical Corps. during the Korean War earning many awards including the United Nations Service Medal for Korea, the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.

He resided in the Highlands section of the city and was a communicant of St. Margaret's Church. After the Army he was employed by Transitron Electronic Corporation as well as for Sanders Associates which later became BAE retiring in 1994. He was a member of the American Legion, UMass Lowell Alumni, Delta Kappa Phi Engineering Fraternity of America, the Industrial Technical Engineering Society, LTI Alumni Association and St. Margaret's Holy Name Society. Gerald enjoyed traveling along coastal Maine, especially Wells Beach where he would frequently visit. He also enjoyed fishing, and reading, especially World War II history. He was also an avid New England Patriots fan.

He is survived by a daughter, Judith A. Hamel of Lowell; a sister Dorothy Gaumont; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Lucky.

He was also the nephew of the late Etta Marie Lavoie.
