George S. Vieira

LOWELL George S. Vieira, 92, most recently of North Chelmsford, died Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Irene (Taylor) Vieira for the past sixty five years.

A son of the late Manuel S. and the late Maria (Athaide) Vieira, he was born July 8, 1920, in Lowell, and was educated in the local schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 150th Combat Engineer Battalion receiving the Bronze Star, and always attended reunions honoring his Military service.

A lifelong Lowell resident, in his younger years he loved bowling, and was a member of two leagues. He was a member of the Knickerbocker Club and the Portuguese American Veterans, and in his later years volunteered at the Salvation Army, the Smith Baker Center, and the Council on Aging. For most of his life, he was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
George loved to dance, sing, take walks, and was an avid blackjack player, enjoying traveling to Atlantic City, Foxwoods, and especially loved his jaunts to Las Vegas.

He will be fondly remembered for entertaining family at children’s birthday parties, and for multiple home improvement projects.

In addition to his loving wife, Irene, he is survived by his children, Sheila A. Miller and her husband, Alan, of Lowell, John Vieira and his wife, Cynthia (Schaller), of Potomac, MD, Nancy Vieira of Santa Fe, NM, and Michael G. Vieira of Nashua, NH; his grandchildren, Anthony A. Miller and his wife, Amanda, of Lowell and Dr. Stephanie A. Hansen and her husband, Jon, of Westminster; his sister, Evelyn Proulx of Dracut; his cousin John Thomas Vieira and his wife Nancy of Lowell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
