LOWELL Edward F. Murphy, Jr., 94, of Lowell, retired Deputy Superintendent for the Lowell Police Department, died Thursday, February 21, 2013, after a long illness. He was the widower of the late Josephine G. (Fitzgerald) Murphy who died in 2002.
A son of the late Edward F. Murphy, Sr., and the late Nora (Ryan) Murphy, he was born July 3, 1918 in Lowell, attended Keith Academy graduating Class of 1935. He then attended Lowell Commercial College and graduated University of Massachusetts Lowell with an associated degree in Criminal Justice.
Mr. Murphy then joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., working under J. Edgar Hoover in the Fingerprint Division for a short while. He returned to Lowell to complete his education. He married and moved to Hartford, Connecticut where he worked in the Pratt and Whitney United Aircraft Corporation until he joind the United States Army.
After his honorable discharge, he moved to Lowell and was appointed to the Lowell Police Department in 1945 where he worked his way through the ranks to become the Deputy Superintendent of the Lowell Police Department until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the Disabled American Veterans-Edith Nourse Rogers Chapter #25.
He resided in the Christian Hill Section of Lowell for forty one years, and was a communicant of St. Michaels Church. Mr. Murphy enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Barbara C. McCarthy of Dracut, Edward J. Murphy and his wife, Judith (Sackalinski), of Lowell, and David K. Murphy and his wife, Gloria (Frechette), Murphy of Townsend; his eleven grandchildren as well as several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; and his brothers in law, Floyd Fields of Westford, John Grande of Westford, and Edward Fitzgerald of Port St. Lucie, FL.
He was the father in law of the late Dennis McCarthy, and brother of the late Eileen Fields, the late Rita Martin, and the late Marie Grande.
