Daniel Braga
LOWELL Daniel Braga, 83, of Lowell, died Thursday, October 1, 2015, at home after a brief illness with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Alvarina (Bettencourt) Braga with whom he celebrated their Fifty Seventh Wedding Anniversary on September 21.
A son of the late Frank and the late Herminia (Santos) Braga, he was born May 31, 1932, in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, and was educated in Graciosa. In 1950, he came to the United States settling in Lawrence before moving to San Diego, California, where he made his home for five years before relocating to Lowell where he resided until his death.
Mr. Braga was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish and a member and Past President of the Holy Ghost Society and also served on the Board of Directors for the past forty years. He was a member of the Portuguese American Center, the ‘Blue’s Club’ and was a volunteer at MCI Shirley as part of the group organized by St. Anthony’s counseling inmates for over seventeen years. In addition he enjoyed fishing, gardening, cruising, and traveling especially to the Holy Land and his native Graciosa.
The light of his life was his family, his beloved Alvarina and his children and especially his grandchildren.
While in California, he worked as a commercial fisherman for five years on tuna clippers traveling all over the World. Once he relocated to Lowell, he worked as a tanner in the local manufacturing Mills.
Besides his wife, Alvarina, he is survived by his children, Daniel Braga and his wife, Susan, of Lowell, Lisa Braga Richards and her husband, Robert, of Lowell, and Donna Braga and her husband, Jon Hipsher, of Colchester, CT; his grandchildren, Michael Braga, Nicole Braga, and Kristina Braga all of Lowell, Robert Richards and Courtney Richards both of Lowell, and Jonathan Hipsher and Samantha Hipsher both of Colchester, CT; his brother Aldevino Braga and his wife, Jean, of The Villages, Florida, his cousins, many nieces, and nephews and extended family.
He was also a brother of the late Mary Lou Norwood and the late John Braga.
YOU ARE INVITED TO HIS CALLING HOURS 3 UNTIL 7 P.M. ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4. ON MONDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY’S CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST., LOWELL AT 10 A.M.. BURIAL IN ST. PATRICK CEMETERY. MEMORIALS IN HIS NAME TO ST. ANTHONY CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST., LOWELL MA 01852.
