Catherine E. Burke
"Teacher in The Woburn School system for over 45 years"
LOWELL Catherine E. (Mahoney) Burke, 90, of Lowell, died Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Town and Country Nursing Home after a long illness. She was the widow of the late Francis Burke who died in 2010..
A daughter of the late James E. and the late Mary L. (Cronin) Mahoney, Catherine was born November 24, 1920, in Lowell, and was educated in the local schools, graduating from Lowell High School. She went on to attend Lowell State College, and earned her Masters Degree in Education from Boston University.
Mrs. Burke made her lifelong home in Lowell, and was a member of the former Sacred Heart Parish and a communicant of Holy Family Parish. She was a fourth grade teacher in the Woburn School System, and had taught school for over forty five years, retiring in 1986. Over the years, she was also a caretaker for her large family, having cared for many ill relatives throughout the years.
For over thirty five years, she enjoyed the company of her German Shepherds and her Pomeranian who showed up at her door and stayed for ten years. She also enjoyed wintering in Inverness, Florida, with her husband after her retirement.
Her survivors include her niece, Joan (Eno) O’Brien and her husband, James, of Chelmsford; her great nieces, Coleen M. (O’Brien) DeChiara and her husband, Mark, of Chelmsford, Erin M. O’Brien of New Jersey; her great grandnephew, Anthony DeChiara of Chelmsford, her great grandniece, Sofia DeChiara of Chelmsford; and several close friends.
She was also the sister of the late Margaret (Mahoney) Eno, and the late Mary P. Mahoney.
