Bernardete ‘Bernie’ Bettencourt
LOWELL Bernardete ‘Bernie’ (Mendonca) Bettencourt, 58, of Lowell, died August 15, 2008 at Kindred Hospital after a short illness.
A daughter of the late Ramiro and the late Maria Gloria (Sousa) Mendonca, she was born May 17, 1950, in Graciosa, moving to Lowell with her family in 1967. She made her home in Lowell and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church. She was also a member of the Holy Ghost Society, and the Sisters of the Holy Rosary Sodaility at St. Anthony's Church. She appeared on many talk shows and television programs with her son. She worked for Joan Fabrics, Wang Laboratories, and for Raytheon Corporation in Lowell for more than twenty years. More recently, she worked as a nurses aid at the Tewksbury State Hospital and provided home health care to the elderly.
She is survived by a son, Reginaldo ‘Troix’ Bettencourt Jr. of Lowell; a daughter, Elizabeth Duarte of Lowell; three grandchidren, Zachary Duarte, Breanna Duarte, and Shane Duarte all of Lowell; four sisters, Maria Lobao of San Leandro, CA, Deolinda Mesquita, Lourdes Veiga and her husband, Manuel, and Hirondina DaSilva and her husband, Manuel, all of Lowell; two brothers, Deocleciano Mendonca and his wife, Guadeloupe of Graciosa, and Clarimundo Mendonca of Tewksbury; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was married to the late Reginaldo Bettencourt of Graciosa, and was also the sister of the late Manuel Mendonca, Joao Mendonca, Elvino Mendonca, and Noe Mendonca.
YOU ARE INVITED TO HER CALLING HOURS 2 UNTIL 6 P.M. ON SUNDAY. ON MONDAY HER FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 8 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL (978 OR 800) 458-6816.
