Barbara A. Mulligan
LOWELL Barbara A. (Mann) Mulligan, 84, of Lowell, passed away at home with her family by her side on February 2, 2017.
Born August 30, 1932, in Lowell, she was a daughter of the late Henry and the late Mary ‘Mae’ (Conroy) Mann. She was educated in Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1950, and was also a baton twirler with Lowell High School.
She grew up in the Sacred Heart Parish neighborhood where she was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church and then a communicant of Holy Family Parish Church. She was also a member of the Poor Clare Guild.
As a child, she enjoyed her many trips with her Aunt Helen to New York City and Washington, DC by train to visit relatives and to go sightseeing. She also fondly remembered as a child fishing in the ‘Hudson River’ in New York with her Uncle Byron and Aunt Helen. In addition, she enjoyed her time traveling to various New Hampshire Coastal Beaches with her family.
Family was everything to Barbara and she cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Barbara retired after working at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the Emergency Room for thirty two years. For the past thirty nine years, Barbara took care of her disabled son, Gary, who was injured in an automobile accident.
The widow of the late Lowell Police Officer, William F. ‘Tiny’ Mulligan, who died on September 5, 1988, she is survived by her six children and their spouses, Joseph W. Howe and his wife, Susan of Lowell, Maryellen Downs and her husband, John, of Lowell, Michael J. Howe and his wife, Athanasia ‘Soula’ Howe of Dracut, John T. ‘Jack’ Howe and his wife, Gail of Lowell, Kevin R. Howe and his wife, Carolyn, of Pelham, NH, and Gary F. Howe; her eight grandchildren, Christal Kum and her husband, Tee, Shane Downs, Jeff Howe and his wife, Caitlin, Christopher Downs, Kevin Howe Jr., Alyssa Howe, Shannah Howe, and Michael Howe; her six great granddaughters, Cassandra, Peyton, Jenna, Meeya, Mariah, and Avery; her sister in law, Barbara Scagos and her husband, Billy, her brother in law, Michael Howe and his wife, Carolyn; and also leaves many friends, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Mann, her sister in law, Margaret McAndrews, Her sister in law, Louise Mann, her friend Rita McCarthy, and her former husband, John J. Howe.
