Arthur P. McMahon
CHELMSFORD Arthur P. McMahon, 87, of Chelmsford, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, in Lowell. He was the husband of Dorothy Norma (Wentworth) McMahon, with whom he celebrated their Sixty-Third Wedding Anniversary last October.
Born October 13, 1925, in Lowell, he was a son of the late John and the late Mabel (Cassidy) McMahon, and graduated from Lowell High School, Class of 1943. Immediately after graduation, he served with the United States Navy during World War II as a naval Machinist Mate First Class and Plank Owner of the Escort Carrier USS Thetis Bay, CVE-90. Arthur served aboard the "jeep carrier" as it transported aircraft to the fleet throughout the Pacific, and, following the surrender of Japan, returned veterans from overseas bases to the United States on "Magic Carpet" duty.
For over 30 years, he worked for and then ran his family's plumbing business, J. F. McMahon Plumbing, and was later employed by and retired from the City of Lowell.
Arthur was a member of the Elks for over 60 years. He loved nature, and enjoyed growing vegetables, camping, and spending family time at the mountain cabin he built in Plymouth, NH. His independent spirit and the frequent twinkle in his eye will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, John McMahon and his wife, Susan, of Windham, NH; his daughter, Gayle Thiel and her husband, Jay, of Townsend; his grandchildren, Katie Porter and her husband, Richard, of Dover, NH, and Allison Thiel and Graham Thiel, both of Townsend; his sisters in law, Rosemary McMahon of Lowell, Virginia MacLean of Lowell, and Jean McPadden of Enterprise, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his twin sister, Jean Webster, his brother, Robert McMahon, and his aunt Mary Brennan.
HIS BURIAL WILL TAKE PLACE PRIVATELY IN ST. PATRICK CEMETERY. ARRANGEMENTS BY THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816.
