Arthur J. Silva
LOWELL Arthur J. Silva, 77, a lifelong Lowell resident, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Genesis Westford House with his family by his side. He was a son of the late Manuel and the late Mary (Avila) Silva.
He was born March 26, 1938, in Lowell, where he was raised and educated. Before he was born, Arthur’s family immigrated from Graciosa, Azores, Portugal to Lowell, where his parents raised their family and became a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony’s Parish. He taught CCD to the youth of the parish and served as an Usher and Lector for St. Anthony Church for many years.
Arthur was a life member of the Holy Ghost Society as well as a past Board Member. He was also a member of the East End Club where he played Cribbage and he enjoyed calling Bingo at the Lowell Senior Center. In addition, he was a volunteer at the Lowell Police Community Substation in Belvidere and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Bruins, and the New England Patriots. Arthur was also a season ticket holder for the Lowell Lock Monsters/Lowell Devils and the Lowell Spinners. Above all, he was especially fond of spending time with his family.
Mr. Silva worked as a machinist for Parker Hannafin Aerospace Manufacturing in Waltham and then in Devens before retiring in 2004 after forty-five years of service.
Arthur is survived by his sisters, Beatrice E. Hogan and her husband, Frank of Westford, and Florence Hilton of Dracut; his nine nieces and nephews, Attorney Frank W. Hogan III and his wife, Kim of New Canaan, CT, Mark D. Hogan and his wife, Joanne of Birmingham, AL, Brian K. Hogan and his wife, Janet of Westford, Michael J. Hogan and his wife, Kelly of Tyngsboro, Attorney Scott D. Hogan and his wife, Marybeth of Sandwich, Cheryl Willett and her husband, Kevin of Dracut, Donna Courtney of Hudson, NH, Karen Spinney and her husband, James, of Hudson, NH, and Thomas Hilton of Dracut. He is also survived by his caregiver and friend for the past four years, Bill Peters of Methuen; and many great nieces and great nephews.
He was also predeceased by his cousin and friend, Rita Pitta.

ON WEDNESDAY, HIS FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT 9 A.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816

 

FOLLOWED BY HIS FUNERAL MASS WILL BE OFFERED AT ST. ANTHONY CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL ST, LOWELL AT 10 A.M..
