LOWELL Maria L. (Linhares) Leal, 87, of Lowell, died after a brief illness Monday, February 18, 2008 at Saints Medical Center. She was the widow of Januario Cardoso Leal, who passed away in 1999.
Born June 28, 1920, raised and educated in Terceira, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Jose, and the late Maria (Borges) Bracelos. She first came to the United States in 1976. She then moved back home to Terceira in 1984, and upon the death of her husband, she returned to the United States.
Mrs. Leal resided in Pawtucketville, and was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church. She enjoyed going to the Senior Center at the Portuguese American Center, she also liked to crochet and listen to music. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She was employed as an assembler with Paris Shoe for five years before her retirement.
She is survived by four children; Januario Leal and his wife, Fernanda, of Lowell, Inocencia Nunes and her husband, Jose, of Tulare, California, Alexandrina Figueiredo and her husband, Jose, of Lowell, Lucia Silva and her husband, Jorge, of Lowell, ten grandchilden; Roberta, Elizabeth, David, Roberto, Diane, Danny, Victor, Susana, Christina, Alison, and ten great grandchildren.
