Bernardete M. (Leal) Da Cunha

LOWELL Bernardete M. (Leal) Da Cunha, 78 of Lowell, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at her home with her loving family by her side. In January of 1963, she married Manuel B. Da Cunha, with whom she shared the last 57 years of marriage.


Bernardete was born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and was a daughter of the late Jose C. Leal and the late Aurora (Augusta) Leal. She was raised in Graciosa, where she attended the area schools. On September 20, 1975, her husband, Manuel, and daughter and son relocated to the United States, settling in Lowell.

She resided in the Back Central Street neighborhood and was a communicant of St. Anthony Church. She enjoyed tending to her flowers, crocheting, doing needle point, and making patchwork blankets. Although she had many hobbies throughout her life, spending time with her family and grandchildren brought her the most joy, especially shopping with her daughter, Livramento.

In addition to her beloved husband , Manuel of Lowell, she is survived by her daughter, Livramento Bettencourt of Lowell; and her son, Jose L. Cunha and his significant other, Mariana Azocar of Lowell. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melanie Vieira and her husband, Joey of Dracut, Jordan Bettencourt and his wife, Shavon of Lowell, Ryan Bettencourt of Lowell, Elisa Ferriter of Lowell, Aurelia Azocar-Cunha of Lowell, Mirabelle Azocar-Cunha of Lowell; and her great grandchildren, Cameron Vieira of Dracut, Chloe Vieira of Dracut, and Valentina Bettencourt of Lowell.

She also leaves behind her brothers and sisters in laws, her cousins, her nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family both in North America and the Azores.

Bernadete was the last of her family, she was welcomed into heaven by her parents, and siblings, the late Lino Leal, the late Manuel Leal, the late Francelina Santos, the late Arthur Leal, the late Jose Leal, and the late Raul Leal.

YOU ARE INVITED TO HER CALLING HOURS AND FUNERAL. HER CALLING HOURS WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 29, 2020 FROM 5 - 8 P.M. AT THE MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL, 978-458-6816.

ON THURSDAY MORNING, HER FUNERAL WILL BEGIN AT THE FUNERAL HOME AT 9 A.M. FOLLOWED BY HER FUNERAL MASS AT ST. ANTHONY CHURCH, 893 CENTRAL STREET, LOWELL AT 10 A.M.. A PROCESSION WILL FOLLOW FOR BURIAL AT ST. PATRICK CEMETERY IN LOWELL.
